Rainbow flag at Ibn Rushd-Goethe mosque

The Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque in Berlin was the first mosque in Germany ever to hoist a rainbow flag in the run-up to Friday prayers today, July 1, which will continue to fly in front of the mosque until the end of July.

Mosque founder Seyran Ateş explained: “Especially for LSBTIQ* people of Muslim faith, such a sign is extremely important, because it shows that they do not have to choose between their faith and their sexual identity, but are accepted as they are.”

The Berlin Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer (left), CDU city chief Kai Wegner, the superintendent of the Evangelical Church in Berlin Bertold Höcker, CSD board members Ulli Pridat, Patrick Ehrhardt and Marc-Eric Lehmann and others were present at the ceremony.

During Berlin Pride Month the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque will host a workshop events on the topic of queer life and Islam on July 24th.
